September 2005

The book “Patrimoine des Balkans”, on sale in bookshops in France from 9th November 2005

In 2001, Patrimoine sans frontières committed itself to a cultural heritage conservation project for an exceptional but relatively unknown location in Albania, the town of Voskopojë. This project, entitled « Voskopojë sans frontières », brought together numerous French, German, Greek and Albanian specialists and experts in a place that was, in the 18th and 19th centuries, known as one of the most cultural and prosperous cities of the Balkans of this time.

In 2004, within the framework of the European Commission’s “Culture 2000” programme, an international field workshop was set up for the conservation and restoration of, notably, the Church of Saint-Athanase and was run under the scientific management of  the “Institut national du patrimoine” (National Heritage Institute), in collaboration with  the “Institut des Monuments de Culture d’Albanie” (Albanian Institute of Cultural Monuments). A variety of other projects were also organised in Voskopojë, including archaeological digs, photogrammetric studies, research studies in architecture, art history, iconography, climatology...

Situated on the main route between Venice, Dürres and Constantinople, Voskopojë was, in the past, home to an Academy, a printing press and numerous churches.  A Christian enclave in the heart of the Ottoman empire, Voskopojë attracted the best artists of the time, such as David Selenica and the brothers Constantin and Athanase Zografi, who learned the techniques for painting church mural frescoes at Mont Athos.

Voskopojë has since been relatively forgotten and this neglect has unfortunately given rise to a series of conservation problems which today are threatening the survival of this precious site and its cultural heritage notably: a monastery and five churches offering exceptional interior and exterior post-byzantine decorative painting.

The recently published work “Patrimoine des Balkans. Voskopojë sans frontières 2004” presents a summary of the first conservation work completed on the sites so far. This first volume is made up of contributions from specialists and experts who went to the site to directly witness the diversity of the work taking place and to understand the importance and significance of the project for the cultural heritage of Voskopojë as a whole.
Indeed "Voskopojë sans frontières" is not an isolated project but part of an overall vision, reflection and study of post-byzantine art in the Balkans in general. Post-byzantine art, a direct descendant of Byzantine art, in fact developed and flourished at the same period as Islamic art in the regions bordering the East and West. This is why, this first volume of “Patrimoine des Balkans. Voskopojë sans frontières 2004”, aims to present how, despite its specificities, the artistic and creative expression of the Balkans are part of an overall rich and diverse tradition.
